Chapter Seventeen

“Argh, I can’t do this,” Mia yelled out as she sat down in the chair.

“So you’re just going to give up like that? What about your kids? Don’t you want to be able to run and play with them,” Lionel asked.

“You already know I do.”

“I only know what you show me and right now you’re showing me that you like being in this rehab center.”

Mia stood back up and yelled out in frustration again before grabbing onto the walker.

“You can yell all you want to as long as you walk while you do it.”

If Mia had her proper strength, she would have picked up the chair she was just sitting in and threw it at her physical therapist.

It had only been two and a half weeks since Mia woke up from her coma. Everything ended up being fine for her mentally, but her physical state wasn’t so good. They took the cast off her leg and discharged her from the hospital, but she had to be checked into Swab Rehabilitation Center for therapy. They needed to help her walk better. She was pretty good with small steps, but she couldn’t walk completely. Once she got the hang of walking with a walker, then she would be able to go home in a couple of weeks.

“Lionel I’m tired?”

“Mia I never plagued you to be a quitter.”

“You don’t even know me so therefore you can’t plague me as anything.”

“You’re right Mia. You’re tired and you want to give up? Then find your own way back to your room,” Lionel said as he turned to walk away.

“ Lionel! Lionel! I know you hear me calling you,” Mia yelled out in frustration.

Lionel continued to walk off as if he didn’t even hear her.

“Fuck,” Mia yelled as she knocked over the bottle of water and tray.

Mia slid down the wall and cried out in frustration. She had never felt so helpless before in her entire life.

“Why didn’t they just succeed in killing me,” Mia cried out. “Why does bad things keep happening to me?”

Lionel stood outside the door and listened to Mia cry for five minutes straight, but he could no longer listen to her be in agony. He knew that he had been pushing her harder than he normally did his other patients, but he could see the potential in Mia and her circumstances were different than the others. All of his other patients were older or had severe issues, but none of those issues were the problem in Mia’s case. Mia was a young woman with two kids that had the potential to run in a couple of months if she believed in herself and worked hard.

“Come on and let me help you up Mia.”

Mia reached her hand out and took Lionel’s.

I’m going to help you get to your room, but you’re not getting in a wheelchair. You can either use the walker or use me for support.

Mia grabbed the walker and took baby steps toward her room. She felt her legs about to give out.
